British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of entry passages leading to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of British forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he commented. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over the holidays. This mission, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
